The hike from the north requires a little more elevation gain but it ascends through a more varied landscape passing below the south summit of Neahkahnie and gaining great views north in the process to reach the Neahkahnie Mountain Viewpoint which offers sublime views south to Nehalem. The problem for Oregon Coast Trail OCT hikers was that between the trailhead on its south side and the beach at Manzanita there was no trail. However there is an informal trail just before this viewpoint at the sharp turn in the trail from east to west that leads up a scramble to a better view. This trail is rated as moderate and definitely has some steep spots that can be tricky for some hikers to navigate.
